THE AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEM IN PHILADELPHIA CELEBRATES THE COMPLETION OF HISTORIC $4.5 MILLION TRANSFORMATION

The African American Museum in Philadelphia recently celebrated the culmination of a transformational $4.5 million renovation project with a fun event titled “Spring into Summer on the Plaza”.  Activities included live music, entertainment and refreshments.  The exterior construction initiative is the third and final phase of the $4.5 million project that has brought significant upgrades to all of the facility’s public spaces including the galleries, rest rooms and auditorium as well as the entire staff level of the building.   It also included the installation of the acclaimed core exhibition, Audacious Freedom: African Americans in Philadelphia 1776 - 1876, presented by PECO.

The project was designed to achieve several key goals including creating an additional 770 square feet of interior space at the entrance and first floor lobby areas; providing better exposure and access by relocating the entrance closer to the corner of 7th and Arch Streets; creating a dedicated space for the museum shop and development of a new plan for the existing front plaza to allow for more open space, more seating and a more flexible area for outside events.
